Sligo match report 08.07.2018

Wanderers closed the gap at the bottom of the premier division table on Limerick to six points with this win over Sligo Rovers.

Ger Pender’s first goal of the season was cancelled out by ex-Wanderer Adam Wixted before Sean Heaney headed home the winner 15 minutes from time.

Wanderers had an early chance after eight minutes. Ger Pender fed Jake Ellis who shot inches wide of the post. Sligo responded immediately when Heaney’s back pass to Moran was intercepted by Drennan but he put his effort just wide. .

Wanderers took the lead on the quarter hour. Rhys Gorman chipped over the top for Ger Pender who had time to control the ball begore firing past Mitchell Beeney for his first goal of the season. Evan Moran produced a fine save from a David Cawley cross.

Sligo were level ten minutes into the second half when Adam Wixted headed home at the back post from Cretaro’s cross. Wanderers winner came in the 75th minute. Rhys Gorman’s free kick on the left was headed home by Heaney. Wanderers had to be thankful to Evan Moran who produced a number of fine saves in the closing stages to deny Sligo an equiliser.
